Blossburg Company Store

The Tioga River runs through Blossburg. In the 1970's, surface mining of coal in the area polluted the river leaving it void of plants and fish and leaving an orange coating on the river rocks.
Thanks to government funding this river will return to life when acid mine discharge will be treated to remove pollutants.
This hand dyed yarn represents this issue. Grey represents the coal dust from mining, the water and river rocks are coated with an orange coloring, speckled yarn boasts of the transition from polluted to cleaner water, the blue represents return to clean water and finally green represents the return of green plants in the river that can support aquatic life!

The idea for Sweet Grass Farm began in 1996 by the Hudyncia family: husband, wife, two daughters, a Shetland sheep named Thor and a Pygora Goat named Isis. It grew into a real farm in 2001 with 40 acres in the Endless Mountains of Pennsylvania, with 30 registered Shetland Sheep, 2 Pygora Goats and 2 Alpaca, as well as chickens, mini donkeys and dogs and cats!

The Shetland flock was begun to help preserve this breed, once considered rare but now coming back particularly in the US. The sheep are hardy and of sweet nature, growing the most luxuriant long fleece-of course! They weathered the tough shores of the Shetland Islands for centuries!

We also grow sweet grass for baskets and smudges-a heavenly scent. The items that are made completely by hand: hand spun, hand dyed and knitted or woven and always carry artist Joan's special touch: a tiny shell bird as a signature.
